The Kingston Cottage is a compact prototype design at the forefront of sustainability achieved through simple design decisions and construction techniques and specifications. The design balances constructability and cost with a truly comfortable and aesthetic structure that can successfully dot the inner blocks of Kingston and provide a more affordable and sustainable form of infill housing.

The simple floor plan achieves quality space and organization in a compact footprint, lending itself to cost-effective construction. In addition, the entirety of the dwelling is fully barrier free. The kitchen is laid out with all appropriate clearances for appliances, sink and work areas and the bathroom as well, is fully accessible. Within the unit, the plan provides appropriate turning space for an accessible path throughout.

The proposal takes a Passive-House approach to the design. The foundation, walls, windows, door and roof are highly insulated, airtight and detailed to avoid thermal bridging. By reducing the air infiltration, providing a balanced approach to solid walls and glass openings, the building envelope will reduce the total energy required to heat, cool and dehumidify the spaces. Roof overhangs provide solar shading for high summer sun while allowing the low winter sun to passively warm the interiors. Integrated energy recovery ventilation will reduce energy loss while maintaining a balanced and high standard of indoor air quality. Walls are constructed using renewable resource wood framing paired with hemp-based insulation products and a rainscreen exterior wood cladding. Constructed of natural materials that provide a resilient and attractive façade, the exterior siding is designed to fit in to the surrounding context. In addition, the design proposes an innovative plywood slab over thermal insulation and a vapor barrier that reduces the overall carbon footprint of the building by reducing the concrete required for the foundation.
